What is slowing AI data centers down right now

AI capacity is only as fast as its slowest input. We track the supply constraints behind every AI build, from grid equipment to memory chips to money, and rank which one sets the pace.

Gas permits & pipelinesPower · L2 On-site powerJupiter gas pipeline slipped to Feb 1, 2027; air permit deadline Nov 23, 2026Critical↗ WorseningWell-supportedTechCrunch, ENR
Gigawatt campuses now bring their own gas generation. At Oracle's Project Jupiter in New Mexico, the delay came from state land-office permit denials for the gas pipeline, not from chips or the grid. Oracle sent a force majeure notice on Sep 24, 2026 and says its 2028 schedule is unchanged.
Grid transformersPower · L1 Grid2 to 5 yearsCritical→ FlatPlausibleFind Critical Supply
The longest single wait in an AI build. Medium-voltage gear is easing, but high-voltage grid transformers still take years. Sources compile different figures, which vary by spec and region.
HV circuit breakersPower · L1 Grid125 weeksCritical→ FlatPlausibleFind Critical Supply
Wood Mackenzie's figure, reported by Reuters and compiled in secondary lead-time reports.
HBM memoryChips · L6 ChipsMost 2027 supply already contracted; new fabs reach volume 2028 to 2029Critical↗ WorseningPlausibleSilicon Analysts, Microsoft Azure: Maia 300
Micron says agreements cover the vast majority of its 2027 HBM bit supply. Microsoft's Maia 300 alone uses 288 GB of HBM4 per chip, so every million chips needs 288 PB.
MV switchgearPower · L3 Power distribution34 to 40 weeks; 52 to 104 weeks at higher voltage classesTight↘ EasingPlausibleFind Critical Supply, Atek Distribution
Figures conflict by source. Linesight shows 34 to 40 weeks; one distributor lists 15 kV gear at 52 to 80 weeks and 38 kV at 78 to 104 weeks.
Large UPSPower · L3 Power distributionAbout 32 weeksTight→ FlatPlausibleFind Critical Supply
Stable since late 2024 according to Linesight's data.
Cost of capitalMoney · All layersCoreWeave 2032 bond yield about 14.8% (Oct 14, 2026)Tight↗ WorseningWell-supportedCNBC
One issuer, not the whole market, but a warning sign for leveraged neoclouds. Hyperscalers still borrow at investment grade.
Claimed vs live capacityMoney · All layersOpenAI claims over 10 GW secured; about 1.9 GW operating at end-2025Watch→ FlatWell-supportedData Center Dynamics
Treat contracted gigawatts as options, not capacity. The gap between announced and running capacity is where schedules slip.
Prefab power modulesPower · L3 Power distributionAs little as 6 months, vs 12 to 14 beforeEasing↘ EasingPlausiblemgrid
Schneider Electric's claim for its new standard 2.5 MW prefab power blocks; available in Europe now, North America later in 2026. Not independently tested.
Where the data comes from

Company filings and statements, utility and permit records, and trade reports on equipment supply. A reading is well-supported when it rests on a primary source or several independent ones, and plausible when it rests on one credible secondary source. Social posts are leads, never evidence. Lead times vary by spec, voltage and region. Not investment advice.
